The Data Warehouse Challenge
Organizations everywhere are facing massive increases in the volumes of data they need to store and manage. Data warehouses, originally developed to deal with gigabytes of data, are now often called on to handle hundreds of terabytes or even petabytes. Keeping all this data in a “one size fits all” database inevitably leads to performance problems: the sheer volume of detail data that needs to be preprocessed for analytical use ends up choking the warehouse systems, and compromises the organization's ability to satisfy Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Simply investing in new hardware, software and DBA resources will provide just enough relief to permit storage of a bit more data before going “back to square one”. No matter how much storage is added to the system, as the database size increases, the time required to do all the necessary preprocessing of the detailed transaction data increases to the point where it exceeds the available batch windows. Alternatively, reducing the amount of data preprocessing means less time is used up — but then the queries that depend on aggregations, cubes and so on will take a very long time to run, and other users may experience severe performance degradation as these objects are built “on the fly”.
The SAND/DNA Compress Solution
SAND/DNA Compress provides outstanding data compression with immediate cost savings for organizations who need to reduce the storage footprint for their data. It can be easily upgraded to SAND/DNA Enhance to restructure and enrich the data for analytic use, or to the full SAND/DNA Access product to allow direct querying of compressed data without the need to decompress it first.
Features of SAND/DNA Compress include:
- Very small data footprint
- Self-defining compressed files — no need to maintain external catalog structures
- Original data files can be reproduced and used to feed any ETL process or database, or used for audit purposes.
