Business Challenge

CHUS was given the mandate to provide clinical researchers with the ability to perform complex ad hoc queries and data mining on patient data drawn from hospital systems. The existing Electronic Health record system was not designed to respond to the complex queries researchers wanted to ask. Also, considerations of patient record confidentiality made analytic access to multiple patient records problematic, and the wealth of information contained in physicians' clinical notes was not searchable.

The systems' features include: a highly flexible data management engine that can easily load data from the hospital's operational systems into a very simple data model; high-performance processing of clinical and evaluative researchers' complex ad hoc queries; minimal administration and programming requirements; a process of record "de-identification" that enables researchers to track cases and procedures without compromising patient privacy; a way to automatically encode physicians' medical notes, so that researchers can query this data along with more structured clinical information.
